• Traveling northeast, the Union Pacific (UP) and formerly known as the Chicago and North Western Railway intersects the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) former Burlington Northern Railroad mainline in the southeast corner.
• Railroad enthusiasts before the park would park outside the interchange connecting the eastern section of the Union Pacific mainline to the western segment of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation line to view trains along the western section of the Union Pacific mainline.
• Notably unsafe many persons would park their vehicles too close to the interchange siding and because of the lack of protection to keep trespassers from wondering onto the tracks the city in response decided to build a park featuring an elevated viewing platform where persons could safely view trains from a distance. The park which was located on the eastern segment of the crossing offered paved parking also included picnic tables, restrooms, a small model railroad shop, vending machines and several other amenities.
• One of the highlights as Rochelle Railroad Park is a railroad scanner with speakers situated in the picnic area where visitors can listen to eastbound trains on approach. Westbound trains approaching the Rochelle Railroad Park are indicated by the crossing signals east of the park’s location.
