Austria has one of the oldest flags in the world. The current banner was established in 1191 when Duke Leopold V fought during the Third Crusade in the Battle of Acre.
You can see the largest emerald on display in Austria. It is at the Imperial Treasury of the Hofburg, and the gemstone is an incredible 2,860 carats.
The summer palace of the Habsburgs is one of the largest buildings of its era. Schonbrunn Palace has at least 1,440 rooms to explore. The oldest zoo in the world was also established in the same area in Vienna in 1852.
The oldest company in Europe and the oldest continuously operating inn was founded in 803 under the name Stiftskeller St. Peter. It is now called Haslauer, and reservations go fast.
Austria is also the only continental European country that isn’t a member of NATO.
