Raccoons are one of the most adaptable animals in the world. They are also one of the most recognizable creatures we see, with their black mask and bushy, striped tails. Some people say that they look like cute bank robbers.
The largest raccoons get to be about the size of a small dog. They live in a variety of climates, calling Europe, the Americas, and Japan home at the moment. These animals don’t mind being around humans, which means you must be careful if you find yourself near one since they’re a common rabies carrier. You can also get leptospirosis or roundworms from them.
Although you can spot raccoons traveling in groups, they don’t tend to be very social. Most of them prefer to be nocturnal as a way to find their food. They do a partial hibernation during the winter months, getting energy off of stored fat when fewer hunting opportunities are available.
A raccoon is surprisingly fast when it wants to run. Some individuals can reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. They have five toes on their front paws that function much like a human hand does. You can see them gripping foods to eat or digging through garbage to find munchies – earning them the nickname of “trash panda.”
