Myrtle Beach

Located in the Horry County of South Carolina, Myrtle Beach is a coastal city that has a total area of 23.55 square miles. The city is situated on the center of a beach known as the Grand Strand in the northeast section of South Carolina. During the peak season; spring, summer and fall, it has been estimated that 14 million visitors flock to the city’s humid sub-tropical weather and beaches. Technically considered as a man-made island since 1936 the beach has been separated from the United States by the Intracoastal Waterway which has forced the city and the surrounding area in general to develop away from the coast.

The remaining rural area where the northern and southern ends meet developed into tourist towns, North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach. Annually the city enjoys more than 2800 hours of sunshine all year round. During the long, hot and humid summer season on average the temperature can ranges from 83 to 91 degrees, and drop as low or close to 70 degrees during the night.  It is common during the hot summer days in the months of June-September for there to be brief and intense thunderstorms which can be severe due to high precipitation.  Winters are generally mild with highs averaging from 57-61 degrees and temperatures dropping as low as 36 degrees between December-February.  On February 16, 2013 Myrtle Beach received a rare storm in which it rained right before snowing.
