• Due to it’s unique combination of mountain railroading and dense traffic, the Norfolk Southern railroad which runs from Altoona to Johnstown is undoubtedly one of the busiest throughout the eastern United States.
• Besides it’s sheer mainline grades due east of the Mississippi River other railfan attractions in Altoona include the, Railroaders Memorial Museum, the famed pedestrian bridge located close to the AMTRAK station, The Brickyard located at Walnut and 34th Street, as well as the World Famous Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin Tunnels located west of Altoona.
• Once you get to the railfan – friendly territory of Gallitzin (three miles from Cresson) you’ll definitely want to see the 1941 PRR N5C beautiful cabin car on display at Tunnels Park overlooking the west portal of the Allegheny Tunnel built in 1855.
• A great place to take pictures of terminal operations and main line traffic Cresson’s Front Street observation platform and engine terminal is located on Allegheny Font’s western slope and west of the Eastern Continental Divide in the Mississippi watershed.
• Handling inbound grain loads and outbound empties RJ Corman RR also carries coal trains into Cresson by way of its Cresson and Irvona divisions.
