Tarantulas are nighttime hunters that love to pounce on their prey. Their diet consists of several insect species, with their favorite meals involving beetles, grasshoppers, and flies. The largest varieties have been known to eat everything from lizards to small birds.
Most tarantulas live underground in the wild. They prefer the jungles near the equator in the Americas, although some have made their way up to the deserts of the U.S. southwest. Instead of making traps to catch food with their silk, this species creates decorative walls and doors for their home.
A tarantula defends itself by shooting abdomen hair at a predator. Each follicle has a sharp barb on it that can get shot into the body of what hunts them by rubbing the individual strands with their legs. You can even eat them if you want – most people say that they taste a little like peanut butter.
Here you can find live webcams of Tarantulas and other spiders located at zoos and other habitats.
